The Jazz Disturbance Jazz Calendar....and Then Some....
Why get up outta bed and expect good news to sing through my radio speaker? At times, I do need a reality check.
Speaking of news....can Jazz news get any more outrageous? Pianist Cecil Taylor was "swindled" out of $500,000 of award money last year by a confidant. Now, that doesn't leave a lot of lunch money for the 85-year old free jazzer. Nothin' like gettin' fleeced by a friend. Friends - overrated in my book. Lock the safe!
In other news, actor Lauren Bacall passed yesterday, a few days after comedian and actor Robin Williams took his own life. It pierces my heart when a beloved artist disappears from the framework of my life. I, like many, appreciated and marveled at Robin's quick jump from one character to another and how he inflated the roles he chose. Bacall was a smoker from her teens into the 1980's, according to IMDb, and her habit no doubt contributed to her deteriorating health over the years, but even I was seduced by her puff-puff-puff scenes with Bogey and thought it incredibly sexy.
One of the more interesting writings I read was on Black composers and how they fare in a mostly white/Euro bubble. Wish I could say I was surprised by the comments, accusations and confessions from Black composers. What did surprise me was the significance of pianist and composer Florence Beatrice Price who I'd never heard of. Should I have? It irks me to no end when someone is shocked that I don't know some Black or African-American figure who they deem supremely important. I see it in their glinty squint at me: "You're Black - you should know who they are!" Memo to ya - I don't know everything there is to know about Black and Afro-Am history. I find it a real joy to discover historical and interesting people as I become more open to new information. Can't swallow it all in four years of college.
Someone else needs a reality check.....
Now, with all that, don't forget to get out and support live music in, out n' about the Hudson Valley of New York!
